Vegan CBD gummies are a fun and easy way to get your daily dose of CBD. They’re great for anyone that is new to CBD as well as CBD veterans. They are predosed with CBD in each individual gummy making them easy to take compared to CBD oils or vapes.

With the sudden explosion of CBD products coming to the market it can be hard to know which gummies to choose, especially since CBD products are not currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This means you need to do your research before you buy as not all CBD gummies are created equal.

We’ve put together a list of the best vegan CBD gummies, as well as delving into the science-based evidence surrounding CBD, to help you make an informed decision and get the best products available to you.

THE BEST VEGAN CBD GUMMIES FOR 2022
We’ve put together a list of the best vegan CBD gummies.

WHAT IS CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the chemical compounds called cannabinoids which are found in the Cannabis sativa (cannabis) plant.

There are currently 113 identified and known cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. The two most common cannabinoids are CBD and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

THC is the most prevalent and CBD is the second. Other notable cannabinoids include Cannabinol (CBN), Cannabigerol (CBG) and Cannabichromene (CBG).

THE HEALTH & WELLNESS BENEFITS OF CBD

CBD is rapidly becoming a popular natural remedy for a variety of ailments and conditions due to its medicinal benefits. Most notably CBD is known for aiding anxiety & depression, helping with pain management and aiding sleep.

When ingested, cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) within our bodies. The ECS regulates functions within our bodies including immune-system responses, sleep and pain management.

According to this 2015 study on CBD, it was found to influence the endocannabinoid system. Most notably CBD was found to increase the levels of anandamide in the body which is a compound linked to regulating pain. This compound can reduce pain perception as well as improve your overall mood.

CLINICAL STUDIES AND RESEARCH OF CBD

There have been numerous studies into the health benefits of CBD and the effect it has on our health and wellbeing. We’re going to delve into some of the studies below:

CBD for anxiety & depression

In our bodies we have a variety of different cell receptors. These receptors are protein-based chemicals which are attached to the cells in the body.

They work by receiving different signals from various stimuli. When we ingest CBD it is thought that it interacts with our CB1 and CBD2 receptors. The majority of these receptors are located in our central nervous system, as well as the peripheral nervous system. The exact way CBD interacts with the CB1 receptors remains unknown, however one 2018 study noted it might alter our serotonin signals.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger that acts as a mood stabilizer and plays a big role in our overall mental health. When a person’s serotonin levels are low they typically experience low mood or depression. Low serotonin levels may also cause anxiety.
If you suffer from anxiety or depression due to low serotonin levels the doctor will likely prescribe you a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). The most commonly prescribed SSRIs are fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft). A 2018 study, which we cover below in more detail, has suggested that some people may be able to manage their serotonin levels with CBD instead of SSRIs.

Always consult your doctor or healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication. There are several notable studies that suggest and highlight the potential benefits of CBD for anxiety. We have highlighted three of them.

  • Study 1

Cannabidiol as a Potential Treatment for Anxiety Disorders Published online September 4 2015.

Brief overview: CBD was shown to have a calming effect on the central nervous system.
Conclusion: The evidence gathered strongly supports the potential use of CBD for treating anxiety disorder.

There have been numerous studies into the health benefits of CBD and the effect it has on our health and wellbeing.

  • Study 2

The Biology and Potential Therapeutic Effects of Cannabidiol published online June 24 2015

Brief overview: In this study CBD was shown to reduce stress in animals such as rats. The subjects experienced lower levels of anxiety as well as improved physiological symptoms of anxiety.

Conclusion: Preliminary research suggests the potential therapeutic value of CBD although more rigorous clinical research is needed.

  • Study 3

Neural basis of anxiolytic effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in generalized social anxiety disorder: a preliminary report published online September 9 2010.

Brief overview: This study researched the effects that CBD had on people diagnosed with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). The subjects that received CBD noted a reduction in their overall anxiety levels.

Conclusion: Compared to the placebo that the other test subjects were given the CBD was
linked to significant reduction in anxiety symptoms.

Simply put one gummy in your mouth at a time, chew and swallow, the same way as you would a traditional gummy sweet.

CBD FOR SLEEP

Some anecdotal evidence and research has suggested that CBD can help aid a good night sleep. When insomnia is caused by related conditions or external factors CBD may help to aid your sleep pattern.

An early 2012 study concluded that, when compared to a placebo, CBD increased sleep duration. There is a link between high cortisol levels, the stress hormone, and insomnia.

People with high cortisol levels at night have been linked to an increase in night time waking.

A further 2019 study found that a person’s cortisol levels decreased when they took 300 or 600 mg of CBD oil. The results from this study suggest that CBD has an effect on the release of cortisol and may potentially act as a sedative. As previously mentioned CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system maintains body function including appetite, mood and sleep. The ECS also regulates our circadian rhythms which is our internal body clock.

This system regulates our cycles of wakefulness and sleepiness by responding to external light changes. As it starts to get dark our pineal gland begins to produce melatonin, a natural hormone, that makes us feel sleepy.

A good circadian rhythm is essential for a good night’s sleep. This 2018 study suggests that CBD supports the Endocannabinoid System which includes the circadian rhythm. In various studies that investigate CBD and sleep it’s not always known why CBD can help to improve a person’s sleep pattern. However, most researchers agree that CBD helps with sleep because it addresses the root cause of the sleep problem. Examples of root causes include pain, physical conditions, mental health disorders such as anxiety or depression and certain medications. More research is needed in the effects that CBD has on sleep.

Here are some of the main studies that look into CBD and sleep.

  • Study 1

Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series Published online January 7 2019
Brief overview: This study was a large retrospective case series held at a psychiatric clinic
where patients were given CBD for anxiety and sleep disorders as well as their usual treatment.
Conclusion: This study concluded that CBD may benefit people that suffer from anxiety and
sleep related disorders. The evidence suggests that CBD has a calming effect on the central
nervous system. More controlled clinical studies are needed.

  • Study 2

Cannabidiol can improve complex sleep-related behaviours associated with rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder in Parkinson’s disease patients: a case series published online May 21 2014
Brief overview: This study looked at patients with Parkinson’s disease and noted that CBD affects our sleep cycles.
Conclusion: The study found that CBD can improve the symptoms of REM sleep disorder (RBD). A person that suffers from RBD acts out their dreams in real time which leads to poor sleep and nightmares.

Vegan gummies are gummies made without any animal products or by-products such as gelatine or honey.

HOW TO USE CBD GUMMIES?

The CBD gummies are one of the easiest ways to get your daily dose of CBD. You simply put one gummy in your mouth at a time, chew and swallow, the same way as you would a traditional gummy sweet. The CBD is either infused or coated onto the gummies. The amount you take throughout the day will depend on your desired outcome.

HOW MANY CBD GUMMIES SHOLD I TAKE?

The amount of CBD gummies you take will depend on a few different factors including:
Your weight
Your tolerance levels to CBD
Your desired effect or outcome
Your unique body chemistry

You don’t need another inspirational quote, you just need CBD ! “

Julia Davis

1 .Your weight

As a general rule people that have a higher weight can tolerate more CBD than people of a lower weight. Although it’s important to note this rule doesn’t always follow.

2 . Your tolerance levels

If you’re brand new to CBD you will have a low tolerance level to CBD and it’s recommended you start with a small dose. You can gradually increase the dosage over a few weeks.

3 . Your desired effect or outcome

It’s important to consider your desired effect or outcome for taking CBD. Ask yourself, why are you taking CBD in the first place?

4 . Your unique body chemistry

Everybody’s body chemistry is different and your body can react differently to CBD compared to someone else. Some people start to notice effects after only one dose, whereas others need more. Pay attention to your body and monitor how you feel.

HOW LONG DO CBD GUMMIES TAKE TO WORK?

There is no set-time frame for feeling the effect of CBD gummies and the effects you experience will depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your weight, your sensitivity to CBD, your tolerance level and the potency of the CBD.

As CBD gummies are edibles they take longer to take effect compared to CBD vapes. This is because the CBD has to work its way through your digestive system before it gets to your bloodstream. Some users have noted effects happening within 30 minutes to one hour. For other people it takes longer.

Some users have noted a speeding up of the process of absorption by sucking on the gummy before swallowing it to allow the saliva to bind to the CBD. Resulting in the CBD entering the bloodstream faster as it bypasses the digestive system. However, more research is needed on this.

WHAT ARE VEGAN CBD GUMMIES?

Vegan gummies are gummies made without any animal products or by-products such as gelatine or honey. As CBD itself is naturally plant-based the only added animal based ingredients normally found in CBD gummies come from the gelatine used to make the gummies. Vegan CBD gummies are free-from gelatine. Gelatine is a protein mainly derived from collagen that is taken from animals. It’s made by boiling the tendons, skin, ligaments and bones with water. It’s normally obtained from pigs or cows.

The vegan alternative to gelatine is pectin which is a naturally occurring starch found in fruits and vegetables. To ensure your CBD gummy is vegan make sure it doesn’t contain eggs, dairy or honey and has a plant-based alternative to gelatin.

ARE ALL CBD GUMMIES VEGAN?

Not all CBD gummies are vegan; a lot of CBD gummies contain gelatine which is sourced from animals. Always check the ingredients list before buying your gummies to ensure they are free-from animal products or by-products. The majority of companies will list their gummies as being vegan if they are but that’s not always the case. Be wary of any companies that don’t list the ingredients of their gummies.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING VEGAN CBD GUMMIES?

Other than ensuring the gummies don’t contain any animal products or by-products, there are certain things you should look out for when choosing your vegan gummies.

  • Where the hemp is sourced

One of the main things to consider is where the hemp for the gummies was sourced. This is incredibly important to ensure good quality hemp. The best hemp farms are generally located in the US and Europe. You also need to ensure the company sources their hemp responsibly and are transparent with their customers.

  • The THC content

Before you purchase your vegan gummies you need to check the THC content within the gummies. A CBD product is only legal and compliant with federal regulations if it contains less than 0.3% THC.

  • Potency of CBD

It’s important to find out how much CBD is in each individual gummy. Some brands can be misleading about the actual content of CBD in their products. The potency of CBD should be clearly marked on the label and description of the product.

  • Third-party lab testing

With an abundance of new CBD suppliers coming to the market, third party testing is essential to ensure you’re getting a good quality product that suits your individual needs.
Check the company’s website to ensure they conduct third party lab testing on all of their CBD products.

Third party tests ensure quality, potency and purity of the CBD products. They will check the gummies are free-from pesticides, heavy metals and other environmental toxins.

Hemp is notorious for absorbing anything it comes into contact with in its growing environment. Third party tests can ensure that the CBD manufacturing and supplier is cultivating their CBD products in a safe and containment -free environment.

The FDA doesn’t currently regulate CBD products so it’s down to the individual companies to ensure they are being responsible and providing safe products. All reputable CBD brands will use third-party testing. Their certificates of analysis (COAs) should be available on their website. If you can’t find it, contact the company and ask to see their certificates.

  • Ingredients

As well as the CBD content you also need to check the other ingredients in the product. The ingredients in CBD gummies can vary from brand to brand. Look for products without artificial ingredients or additives.

Some people also like to avoid high fructose corn syrup. Aim to find organic gummies that are made with non-GMO ingredients and contain only real sugars and natural flavorings.

  • Avoid companies that make medical claims

Although there are many official studies into the potential benefits of CBD it’s advised to avoid any CBD companies that make their own medical claims without sufficient studies or reports.
The FDA has not approved the effective and safe use of CBD. To date the only FDA approved CBD product is the anti-seizure medication called Epidiolex.

DOES CBD HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?

A 2017 review into the safety and side-effects of CBD concluded that CBD is a relatively safe treatment option. Side effects were noted to be relatively uncommon but some minor side effects can occur. The side effects a person experienced were closely related to dosage.
The 2017 review looked at multiple studies regarding the safety of CBD for humans. The most commonly reported side effects were:

  • diarrhea
  • tiredness
  • changes to appetite

Compared to the other drugs traditionally used to treat the conditions in the review, CBD was noted to have a ‘better side effect profile’.

The review indicated a need for further studies into toxicological parameters, including the effect CBD has on hormones. Additionally, the need for more clinical trials with a greater number of participants and longer administration of CBD periods.

CBD can interact with other herbal products, supplements and medications, especially blood thinners. It’s also advised to be cautious of taking CBD with other products that have similar effects. For example, any substances that cause sleepiness, including opioids, benzodiazepines (Ativan or Xanax), antidepressants, antihistamines (such as Benadryl) and antipsychotics. This may lead to increased fatigue and sleepiness.

You may find this 2020 research conducted by researchers from Penn State College of Medicine useful which included a breakdown of THC and CBD drug-drug interactions.

Always speak to your doctor or healthcare provider before taking CBD.

CBD ISOLATE, CBD BROAD-FULL SPECTRUM & CBD FULL SPECTRUM, WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

As previously mentioned CBD comes from hemp (the Cannabis sativa plant). CBD is just one of over 113 different types of cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

CBD isolate only contains CBD and no other cannabinoids. It’s often known as a pure form of CBD. It does not contain any THC unlike full-spectrum CBD.

Broad-spectrum CBD contains all of the cannabinoids as well as other compounds such as myrcene, pinene and limonene but doesn’t contain THC.

Full-spectrum CBD contains all of the cannabinoids that are found in the hemp plant, including THC as well as other terpenes and flavonoids. There is an interesting theory about all of the cannabinoids together known as the entourage effect. The theory suggests that you get more benefits from the cannabis plant when all of the cannabinoids are combined together like they are with full-spectrum CBD. It’s suggested that when phytocannabinoids and terpenes come together it creates an enhanced effect. More research is needed on this.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CBD GUMMIES AND CBD OIL?

Also known as CBD tincture, CBD oil contains some form of cannabidiol (CBD) extract. It’s administered sublingually (under the tongue). It normally comes in a small glass bottle with a dropper lid. CBD gummies are candy edibles that contain CBD. They need to be sucked, chewed and swallowed.

CBD oil and CBD gummies have a different rate of absorption. When you use CBD oil the effects normally last for approximately 4-6 hours. After 1 ½ hours the CBD effect reaches its pinnacle. In contrast CBD gummies have to travel through your digestive system before they reach your bloodstream. This means it can take up to 90 minutes before you notice the effects.

WHY USE VEGAN CBD GUMMIES?

CBD gummies are an incredibly popular way for people to take their daily dose of CBD. One of the main reasons they are so popular is due to the range of different flavors you can buy them in. They make a tasty treat whether you’re working from home or out and about. They come in handy travel-size containers making them easy to carry around with you.
As they look like traditional candy gummies they are very discreet and you can eat them when you’re out without drawing attention to yourself. Most good quality CBD gummies are made from natural ingredients and are non-GMO, making them a healthy daily treat.
There are so many different options to choose from making it easy for you to find the perfect gummy for your individual needs.

Frequent Asked Questions about CBD gummies

The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp if a CBD product is hemp-derived and contains less than 0.3% of THC; it’s legal on a federal level but still illegal in some state laws. Any marijuana-derived CBD products are still illegal by federal law but can be legal under some state laws.
It’s advised to check your individual state laws on the subject.

CBB gummies can contain either CBD isolate, broad-spectrum CBD or full-spectrum CBD.
Check on the label of the product before you buy to ensure you’re getting the right type of CBD for your needs. CBD isolate is the most common form of CBD used in gummies.

The best CBD gummies are made by reputable CBD suppliers who are 100% transparent about their business and products. The ideal CBD gummy would be made from organic, non-GMO ingredients and contain zero artificial sweeteners or additives.

The dosage you take depends on a variety of factors including why you’re taking the CBD, your weight and your tolerance levels to CBD. Recommended daily doses vary from 5 mg per day to 150 mg per day. If you’re new to CBD it’s recommended to start small and work your way up to larger doses over a period of time. Monitor the effects the CBD is having on you and adjust your dosage accordingly.

It’s highly recommended to always stick to the recommended daily dosage for your CBD gummy product. In general CBD can be tolerated in fairly high doses but it can have negative side effects.

How quickly you feel the effects of CBD gummies depends on a variety of factors but as a general guide you should start to feel the effects within 30 to 60 minutes

THC, aka Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant. It works by binding to receptors in your brain that control your mood and pain. This binding action is what can cause that euphoric high feeling commonly associated with smoking marijuana. For a CBD product to be legal it must contain 0.3% THC or less. These low levels of THC will not get you high.

The FDA advises against using CBD gummies if you’re pregnant or nursing. This includes products with CBD, THC and other cannabis products. There has been little research into the effects that CBD has on pregnant people.
